The Perfect Base Part 1 – Skin

As my first blog I thought it would be best do as Maria Von Trap sings and ‘start at the very beginning… a very good place to start’.

The perfect base surely starts with perfect skin? No matter how much we spend on foundations, powders, concealers and primers what we all really want is that ‘naturally glowing, blemish-free, dewy but not oily, perfect, even skin tone.’

However few of us are so blessed that we don’t have some kind of hang up about our complexion. Whether it be blemishes, blotchiness, dryness or that stubborn oily t-zone, we all have something to moan about.

I am on a continual quest for perfect skin and have been given many pieces of advice over the years but the first and foremost rule that I have been instructed to live by is that old mantra: CLEANSE TONE MOISTURISE – no matter how drunk you are or how attractive the man sleeping next to you may be (easier said than done).

For lazy ladies here are some fuss-free make-up removers:

Simple Clear Skin Oil Balancing Facial Wipes
(£3.20 for 25)

The Oil Balancing wipes have a nicer smell than the original ones and are packed with zinc to fight blemishes! Although many skin therapists argue wipes aren’t great for the skin, they are surely better than nothing!

Bioderma Crealien H20 Micellar Solution
(£10.88 for 500ml)

The French do great wine, good cheese, sexy men but also excellent skin care. Loved by make-up artists and models alike, it is the perfect make-up remover for sensitive skin types and can be found in all good French pharmacists. Ask a French friend to pop one in the post or purchase online:

Clarins One Step Facial Cleanser
(£19 for 200ml)

Sweep away the day with this one step cleanser to purify the skin, plus it smells like an orangery!

If you want to take a little more care here are a few suggestions.

Neutrogena Visibly Clear 2in1 Wash Mask
(£3.99 for 150ml)

I can’t rave enough about Neutrogena. My blemish prone skin would not/could not calm down until I started using the Visibly Clear range. My skin cleared up within weeks. Better still, for particularly disastrous break-outs, the 2in1 Wash Mask can also be used as a mask. For that tricky time of the month try the Spot Stress Control Daily Scrub (£4.49 for 150ml).

Eve Lom Cleanser

The mother of all cleaners, this multi-award winning balm cleanser promises more radiant, glowing skin from day one! Combined with a muslin cloth and infused with aromatic plant oils it not only does all the normal things you expect of a cleanser but it helps flush out toxins and improves circulation too! Pricey at £40 for 50ml, but it sounds like a good investment to me! Purchase online or in Space NK stores.

Biotherm, Biosource Gel for Normal or Biosource Foaming Cream for Dry Skin

If you love that fresh, clean smell and squeaky-clean feeling, then look no further than Biotherm. These wash off cleansers leaves skin well cleansed and feeling super soft. Available in Boots, £15.32 for 150ml.

Rose Water

A traditional favourite renowned for its soothing smell and closing the pores. Perfect for sensitive skin types who don’t want to overdo their skin care regime. It’s cheap and available from all good pharmacists. If you want a fancy bottle try Neil’s Yard Rehydrating Rose Toner £15.50 for 200ml.

Neutrogena Visibly Clear Eliminating Cleansing Lotion

An obvious choice from me. It smells a little stringent at times but leaves skin completely cleansed whilst continuing the battle against blemishes and blackheads!

Avene Cleanance Toner  (£8.25 for 200ml)

Our French friends come up trumps again with this relatively unknown brand. Avene is your new best friend if you suffer from acne or blemishes. This mattifying cleanser absorbs excess oil for long lasting anti-shine. For maximum results try the full range. Available online and in Boots stores.

Olay Beauty Fluid

Your grandmother and mother will both tell you that Oil of Olay (her original name) is the queen of skin care. To this day, she still reigns across the beauty aisles. Olay beauty fluid offers the perfect moisture for all skin types whilst having that clean, comforting smell that will be used and remembered for generations to come. A complete bargain at £ 4.99 for 100ml, all hail queen Olay!

Clarins Multi-Active Night Youth Recovery Cream

Alcohol is your skin’s archenemy. It sucks the goodness and moisture out of your delicate complexion… not that it would ever stop us from a night out on the tiles. However this miracle cream will be your saviour, promising you ‘eight hours sleep in a jar’.  With an anti-stress treatment no one will ever know you were naughty the night before. It’s expensive at £42 for 50ml but well worth it. I used it nightly in my freshers’ year… enough said!

Chanel Hydra Beauty Cream

I am recommending this mainly because it smells like heaven in a jar. Imagine butterflies engulfing your room whilst bluebell and rose petals cascade all around! Am I going over the top? Maybe, but not only does it smell incredible it serves as a night and day cream offering optimum hydration protecting against environmental stress.  £50 for 50ml.

  1. Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book
in it or something. I think that you could do with some pics to drive the message
home a bit, but instead of that, this is excellent blog.
A great read. I will certainly be back.
